What is the difference between hades and thanatos

In the same way that Nyx was night, and Hypnos was sleep - Thanatos was the concept and embodiment of death. Unlike Hades, who largely seems to have commanded respect, Thanatos was sort of the black sheep.

Not the good ones, anyway. The main reason that he was hated so much by his contemporaries his fellow gods and mortals alike in mythology was that he was regarded as being spiteful and wrathful in his actions, and would afflict anyone, regardless of age or health. Presumably, this is how the Greeks explained the phenomena of death without injury or old age. There are several occasions in which he was tricked or overpowered, such as when Heracles literally wrestled him to the ground in order to save the soul of Alcestis, a princess who traded her soul for that of her husband, Admetus, on his fated day of death.

Heracles thought that Admetus was a rad dude, so he promised to help him get his hot wife back, and bam. Thanatos got a knuckle sandwich, and Admetus got several more years of wedded bliss. Another occasion on which Thanatos was less than useful was the time when Sisyphus deceived him, for which he was punished by being ordered to push a boulder up a hill forever. But wait, I hear you cry! You just said that this myth was attributed to Hades! Hypnos : Thanatos initially appears rather cold towards his brother, largely ignoring him for long periods while occupied with his work.

However, he does care for Hypnos, and intervenes when Hypnos is at risk of losing his job as the attendant to the House of Hades.

It is through his and Zagreus' encouragement that Hypnos starts improving in his work, through discovering and embracing Hypnos' love of creating lists to help him plan out his time better. Zagreus also encourages Thanatos to be more outwardly kind to Hypnos, and their relationship improves from there. Charon : Charon is enigmatic to the many denizens of the Underworld, Thanatos included. Even when asked by Zagreus, Thanatos is unable to reveal any information about Charon or his plans, suggesting that Zagreus might know the boatman better than he does.

Eris and Nemesis: Thanatos is not close to his sisters, but acknowledges their roles in providing shades for the Underworld. He seldom brings them up, and is hesitant to even evoke their names. The Fates: Despite all being children of Nyx, Thanatos isn't close or even in contact with his prophetic sisters. Zagreus : Zagreus and Thanatos are childhood friends, and share a strong bond, despite having opposite personalities.

This is possibly because of his status as a god of death, and Zagreus' role of a god of life, blood, and rebirth. Thanatos was initially visibly hurt when Zagreus decided to leave the Underworld, as he had neglected to inform the god of death. However, he continues to assist the son of Hades at times. The two may form a romantic relationship, should Zagreus choose to pursue one.

Megaera : Megaera and Thanatos are work colleagues and friends, having bonded over their mutual frustration over being tricked by Sisyphus in the past. Sisyphus : The former king had once tricked Thanatos to dodge his own death. This earned the ire of the god of Death, as well as many of the other gods of the Underworld. His ire continues to persist, even ages after the fact, and continues to distrust Sisyphus despite his changed demeanor after being punished, and even with Zagreus' support of the former king.

Like his brother Hypnos, those visited by Thanatos know that it is their time to go without having to struggle or experience the hardships of being dead.

In fact, there is a modern touch to studying death, and it is named after Thanatos. The science is called Thanatology, where it talks about the psychological and emotional aspects of approaching death. King Sisyphus. King Sisyphus was the king of Corinth. Sisyphus has many encounters with Zeus, mainly because he was messing with him, and Zeus is not the god you want to mess with.

So, Zeus did everything he could think of to punish the mortal, so he asked Thanatos to take him to the underworld. However, Thanatos was chained instead of Sisyphus. In this period, no human could die because Thanatos was not there to collect their souls. Ares did not like it in the very least because he is known for his love of bloodshed and death. Some stories say Hades is in place of Thanatos. Zeus gave him Sisyphus the punishment of rolling the boulder up and down the hill over and over again.

But the most popular myth is that Thanatos gave Sisyphus to Hades and Hades negotiated with him. Sisyphus believed that if he could push the rock out of Tartarus, he would become alive once again.

However, whenever Sisyphus almost made it to the top, the rock would roll down again to torment him, and he would not stop the punishment. Even though Hades Thanatos definitely have differences from each other, they work together to manage the dead accordingly. They are not the bad guys, unlike the Christian depiction of the devil who lives in hell. They are just working to have a peaceful world under the earth.
